Living Here

Shorter is an ideal place to locate a new business or raise a family while enjoying a rural setting. Rich in Alabama history, great American Naturalist William Bartram discovered the beauty of East Alabama while traveling through what is now Macon County, Alabama in 1775.

In fact, one of Alabama’s ten environmental wonders, the Bartram Trail is in the beautiful Tuskegee National Forest, fifteen minutes from the Town of Shorter. For the outdoor enthusiast, hiking, camping, fishing, and hunting grounds can be found throughout the Town of Shorter area.

Shorter, home to several state historical sites, still boasts one of the best and longest stretches of the Old Federal Road, built in 1804. Named for former Alabama Governor John Gill Shorter and incorporated in 1984, Shorter, Alabama embodies the memories of the proud Creek Indian Nation, the Old South, and the Civil Rights Movement while holding the promises of a 21st Century community.
